WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The branch of the Metropolitan Police Department focused on protecting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people is changing its name.

The MPD announced Monday night that the Gay and Lesbian Liasion Unit will now be known as the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Liasion Unit (abbreviated as the LGBTLU).

The MPD says the name change is an effort to more inclusive to all members of the LGBT community.

The unit also spearheads public education campaigns aimed at cutting down on hate crimes in the LGBT community.
