WASHINGTON — Following a short tenure as interim chief of DC Police, Executive Assistant Chief Ashan M. Benedict is leaving to pursue a career opportunity with the United States Capitol Police (USCP).
Benedict was appointed by Chief Robert J. Contee III in 2021 after serving at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) since 1998. He served as Interim Chief of Police from May – July 2023.
“I want to express my appreciation to Executive Assistant Chief Ashan M. Benedict for his service to the Metropolitan Police Department over the past two years, including his service as Interim Chief of Police,” Chief of Police Pamela A. Smith said in a statement Friday. “He has provided dedicated leadership and helped navigate the agency through a variety of challenges. We appreciate his service.”
USCP Chief Tom Manger says he is excited to welcome Benedict to the department and looks forward to seeing what Benedict's years of experience will bring.
“He comes to us with many years of law enforcement leadership experience working at the DC Metropolitan Police Department and 28 years of federal law enforcement experience with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF)," said Manger. "While his primary role will be to lead the Department’s protective and intelligence operations, we are looking forward to the benefits he will bring to the USCP as a whole.”
DC Police Chief Smith has since appointed Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll to serve as the department’s next Executive Assistant Chief following Benedict's departure. Carroll previously served many roles throughout the department as an Assistant Chief of Police since 2017.
