WASHINGTON — A person in D.C. was injured after attempting to light a fire pit on the balcony of a high-rise apartment Sunday night.

Firefighters responded to a box alarm on the 1900 block of 14th Street Northwest. One person was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The building was not structurally affected by the fire.

Using a fire pit within 25 feet of a structure is illegal, D.C. Fire said. Police have not said whether the person is facing any penalties for illegally using the fire pit.

Officials have not said what kind of fire pit was used. Just days ago on Oct. 17, nearly 90,000 tabletop fire pits from the brand Colsen were recalled for causing serious burn injuries.

The area of the 1900 block of 14th Street Northwest is primarily commercial with some residential buildings. It is between T and U streets.
