Hypothermia Alerts issued in DC and Montgomery County, Maryland

"These temperatures significantly increase your risk for hypothermia and frostbite," D.C. officials said.

WASHINGTON — Officials in the DC area have issued hypothermia alerts for Friday night starting as early as 7 p.m.

In D.C. the hypothermia alert will begin at 7 p.m. due to cold temperatures. The National Weather Service reports that temperatures will be 31 degrees but will feel like 27 degrees due to the wind chill. 

"These temperatures significantly increase your risk for hypothermia and frostbite," D.C. officials said. 

Residents are encouraged to stay inside or bundle up if planning to go out. Those who need help finding shelter may call 311 or 202-399-7093 for accessible shelter transport. For all animal emergencies, including pets left outside in extreme temperatures, call the Humane Rescue Alliance at 202-723-5730.

Another hypothermia alert was issued in Montgomery County, Maryland as well. This one begins at 8 p.m.

"Montgomery County has activated a Hypothermia Alert for extreme cold for Fri, Nov 24, 8:00 pm until Sat, Nov 25, 11:00 am," said County officials. "Expect wind chill below 32 degrees. Wear layers if you go outside. Take extra precautions if you spend significant time outdoors."

Signs of hypothermia in adults, according to the CDC include:

  • Shivering.
  • Exhaustion or feeling very tired.
  • Confusion.
  • Fumbling hands.
  • Memory loss.
  • Slurred speech.
  • Drowsiness.
