District of Columbia officials are getting ready to build their first water tower since 1945.

DC Water officials said in a statement Monday that construction on the St. Elizabeths water storage tower is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks. The 170-foot, $14-million tower is scheduled to be complete in 2018. It will replace an existing tower which was originally built in the 1930s.

Officials say some areas east of the Anacostia River have historically experienced low water pressure. The new water tower is part of a plan to help.
