WASHINGTON — D.C.'s Mayor Muriel Bowser deployed the District's Snow Team ahead of possible freezing rain Thursday morning.
The team began spreading brine on bridges, overpasses and National Highway System routes and roadways starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday night. According to a release from Bowser's office, the National Weather Service predicts that the inclement weather will begin Wednesday evening around midnight and continue until 6 a.m. on Thursday. Additionally, freezing temperatures are expected to remain until around 10 a.m. Thursday morning. The release further explained that precipitation is expected to continue throughout the day.
For twelve hours, from 7 p.m. Tuesday through 7 a.m. Wednesday, the District's Snow Team has approximately 86,000 gallons of brine to apply to streets in order to prepare for the inclement weather.
Officials are urging residents and businesses to prepare themselves for the winter weather by applying rock salt, deicer or non-clumping kitty litter to the sidewalks nearby their properties to reduce icing. Additionally, business and homeowners are reminded that they must clear their sidewalks, parklets, and streateries of any ice or snow within eight daylight hours of an event’s end.
Residents in D.C. are also encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors and register for AlertDC to stay up to date on weather alerts. Those who want to volunteer to help other residents can volunteer with ServeDC to assist in clearing the sidewalks of elderly and disabled residents.
