WASHINGTON — Police are investigating after an off-duty DC Housing Authority Police Sergeant was shot in Northeast D.C. Tuesday evening.
According to a spokesperson with the Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the 1600 block of New York Ave NE for a shooting shortly after 5:15 p.m.
When officers arrived, they learned the off-duty sergeant was driving to work westbound on New York Avenue when he was shot. He was conscious and breathing when help arrived and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. There is no word on his current condition at this time.
The District of Columbia Housing Authority (DCHA) is a government agency that provides affordable housing to extremely low- through moderate-income households. The Housing Authority Police is made up of both uniformed and plain-clothed officers who enforce laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations for DCHA's residents, employees, and properties.
Police are searching for a gray Honda with heavily tinted windows and unknown Maryland tags. The vehicle was last seen traveling northbound on Montana Ave. NE, from New York Ave. NE.
The sergeant has only been identified as a 27-year veteran of the department.
