WASHINGTON — Snow across the DMV caused many closures Tuesday, including the federal government offices, but if you work for the DC Government that is not the case.
Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Tuesday morning that the DC Government would open on time, but supervisors are encouraged to allow employees to use liberal leave due to the weather conditions.
But what is liberal leave?
It is also known as unscheduled leave and when it is in effect, most employees are authorized to use leave or leave without pay for the days of a declared emergency without getting advanced approval.
For unscheduled leave, the following rules apply, according to the DC Human Resources website:
- An unscheduled leave policy allows non-essential and non-emergency employees to use annual leave, leave without pay, exempt time off, or earned compensatory time without obtaining advance approval or providing detailed justification.
- Normal requirements for non-essential and non-emergency employees to notify his or her supervisor within prescribed time limits are suspended.
As for DC Public Schools, Mayor Bowser announced that they will stay closed Tuesday.
The District Snow Team has been deployed. Based on current weather conditions, intermittent snow is expected through 1 p.m., including freezing rain from 5 a.m. to noon. In a news release, Bowser advised cautious travel for all residents.
Here's some winter weather tips:
- Apply abrasives – deicer, rock salt or non-clumping kitty litter – on sidewalks.
- Have enough over-the-counter and prescription medications for your family and pet(s).
- Make sure your gutters are cleared of leaves. You don’t want leaves to block the flow of rainwater that may freeze.
- Turn off all outdoor water faucets.
- Keep your vehicle’s fluids tanks – gas, water, antifreeze and windshield wiper – full.
- Have a flashlight, blankets, and scrapers in your vehicle before a storm begins.
