DC Councilmember releases redacted version of Falcicchio sexual harassment report

This redacted release of the 117-page report comes just days after the unredacted version was leaked to the Washington Post.

WASHINGTON — On Friday, DC Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau released a redacted version of an independent counsel's review into the District’s investigations into sexual harassment complaints against John Falcicchio, the Mayor’s former chief of staff and deputy mayor for planning and economic development.

Falcicchio used to be D.C.'s Deputy Mayor. He worked with Mayor Muriel Bowser for eight years. He resigned in March 2023 before sexual assault allegations against him became public. A week ago, WUSA9 learned the D.C. government had settled two of the victims' complaints against him.

This redacted release of the 117-page report comes just days after the unredacted version was leaked to the Washington Post. That version included the names of the victims involved, setting off the victims' attorneys and Nadeau.

On Tuesday, Nadeau reacted to the confidential report into sexual harassment by ex-Deputy Mayor John Falcicchio leaked to the media. The internal investigation was shared before the victims themselves got a chance to read the review.

“It is shameful,” said Nadeau. “I can only imagine how it must make them feel.”

One of the attorneys provided a statement to WUSA9, saying:

"We are profoundly disappointed and angry that more than a year after our clients bravely decided to come forward, the D.C. Government has still not learned how to treat survivors. The behavior and the secrecy around the release of the Inspector General Report is disgusting.”

Days after speaking with WUSA9, Nadeau released a redacted version of the report which is available to read online here

“I hope and I expect that this report will result in action that will make future incidents less likely and make the process of reporting, investigation, and response more transparent and more effective,” Nadeau said. “What these women went through is horrific. No one should have to suffer like they did, especially at the hands of someone in a position of authority and power. No employee should feel unsafe in their workplace. No employee should be subject to sexual harassment, and no one should fear retribution for coming forward.”

Additionally, Nadeau is working on a bill that would create a DC law containing elements of the Mayor's 2023 executive order banning sexual relationships between supervisors and their employees and requiring increased workplace training.
