WASHINGTON — D.C. Council has voted to remove Councilmember Jack Evans as Chair of the council's finance committee in light of allegations involving ethics violations.
In addition to removing Evans from his role, the Council also voted to hire a law firm to investigate whether he violated council rules by using his public office for personal gain.
D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson said law firm O'Melveny & Myers will conduct the investigation and a five-member ad hoc committee will review findings in September with goal of making disciplinary recommendations in October.
Evans' home was raided by the FBI in June. He announced his resignation as the chair of the D.C. Transit Authority after a legal memo became public and verified that he violated board ethics.
Evans is accused of secretly taking $50,000 from one parking company, and using his position of power to work against the interests of another parking company competitor. He acknowledged he violated the ethics code by not disclosing a conflict of interest, though he previously denied any wrongdoing.
