WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- It appears Mayor Muriel Bowser's crime plan will get a big no when it heads before the city council. There is a long list of opponents, including the council's judiciary committee, police union, attorney general and head of D.C. courts. All who are major legal issues with these warrantless searches.
The mayor, who blames the 40% spike in murders on repeat offenders, calls for police to conduct searches of parolees and their homes at any time. Inmates would have to consent to these stepped up searches as a condition of early release.
Judiciary Committee Chairman CM Kenyan McDuffie said he and other council members have their own plan that would create an Office of Neighborhood Engagement and Safety to work with people who are at high risk of participating in or being a victim of violent crime. They also want to put social workers in hospitals and the police department. The council plan also requires more training on preventing "biased-based policing."
Opponents with Black Lives Matter DC say the mayor's plan is too pro-police but Bowser's bill calls for community grants to work on crime prevention, job training and social services.
