WASHINGTON (WUSA9) — It’s “All About Watermelon!” on Friday in Southwest when the USDA hosts an official watermelon eating contest.

This week, Farmers Market at Night will offer a wide variety of products from farmers, ranchers and small food businesses from the Chesapeake Bay Region. But this time, the USDA threw a little competition into the mix.

A watermelon eating contest, a seed spitting contest, and a carving contest are all scheduled to take place on the corner of 12th Street and Independence Avenue SW near the Smithsonian Metro station.

Each eater will receive a slice or wedge of watermelon. Once the competition begins, the contestant’s hands must remain behind their backs. Eaters will be disqualified for touching the watermelon, plate or table. Whoever completely eats their slice first wins!

One adult and one child will be crowned the grand prize winner and receive a trophy carved from a watermelon.

Attendees can test their watermelon seed-spitting skills in the “spitway,” provided by the National Watermelon Promotion Board. The pit is 3 feet wide and 40 feet long.

The competitions kick off at 4 p.m. There is no fee to participate.
