WASHINGTON — A cellphone exploded at a high school in Northwest D.C. on Thursday, leaving one person hurt.
DC Fire and EMS responded to Roosevelt High School, located on 13th Street Northwest, after a box alarm at the building due to the phone exploding. There was no fire as a result of the incident.
Officials say one person was evaluated for minor injuries sustained.
According to fire investigators, the cellphone exploded due to a lithium-ion battery failure. This is the latest lithium-ion battery issue to happen in D.C. On Tuesday, a fire burned through a three-story apartment building -- critically injuring one person and leaving 23 others without a home. The cause of that fire was determined to be due to a lithium-ion battery on an electric scooter.
"For those who charge their phones in bed or under the pillow, Don’t," the fire department said in a social media post.
