Boil Water Advisory in parts of DC lifted

As of 5 a.m. Sunday, drinking water meets quality safety standards and tap water can be used, DC Water says.

WASHINGTON — The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) announced Sunday morning that the Boil Water Advisory issued in parts of Northwest and Northeast D.C. has been lifted.

All drinking water meets quality safety standards and tap water can be used as of 5 a.m. Sunday, DC Water posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

DC Water collected and tested water samples Friday and Saturday, which came back clear.

It's advised that people residing in the previously affected area should take the following precautions before using the water as normal:

  • Run the cold water taps for 10 minutes (if water was not used at all during the advisory).
  • If known sources of lead are present, if possible, continue to filter the water using a NSF/ANSI Standard 53 lead-certified filter before using it.
  • Discard food, beverages or ice prepared with water that was not boiled during the advisory.
  • Consult the owner’s manual to find out how to sanitize appliances and home filtration systems if used during the advisory.

If you have any questions, you can call the 24-Hour Command Center at (202) 612-3400.

What caused the Boil Water Advisory?

DC Water issued the Boil Water Advisory after a temporary loss of water pressure on Friday. Pressure was restored Friday afternoon, and the cause of the loss has not been announced.

The loss of water pressure could result in fecal contamination or other disease-causing organisms getting into the system and pose a health risk. The advisory was issued as a precaution, DC Water says.
