WASHINGTON — A man led police on a chase, crashed and broke into a family's home where he barricaded himself inside, police said. The standoff ended with a shootout, when the suspect was wounded and taken into custody. He's currently hospitalized for treatment of his injury.
Multiple agencies were involved in a police chase with the man that started in Maryland around 2 a.m., police said. The chase ended when the man crashed his car near Alabama and Pennsylvania Avenues.
The man then ran from his car, exchanging gunfire with police, and broke into a home in the 3900 block of Pennsylvania Avenue. The homeowners were inside at the time, but were able to get out safely, according to police.
Multiple police agencies exchanged gunfire with the suspect at the rear of the home. MPD's Emergency Response Team was called to the scene and were eventually able to get into the home where the man was barricaded.
Police say the suspect was taken into custody around 7:30 a.m. Monday morning.
No shots were fired inside the home, but the man was wounded and taken to the hospital for treatment.
Police say they recovered two weapons at the scene. One was in the house where the suspect was taken into custody, and another was taken from his car.
The suspect has not been identified at this time. MPD Assistant Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll told WUSA9 it is believed the man was involved in "multiple incidents" Sunday and Monday.
Bowie Police say the man was wanted for numerous violent crimes involving a handgun in D.C., Prince George's County, Howard County, and two incidents in the City of Bowie.
The 3700-4000 block of Pennsylvania Ave, SE, and 40th and R Street, SE, remains closed until further notice.
