Fibroid awareness event to celebrate empowerment in white dresses

The White Dress Project will host its annual Empowerment Experience July 11-13.

WASHINGTON — July is fibroid awareness month. Fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that grow inside a woman's uterus and can cause extreme pain, heavy bleeding and fertility problems. According to medical research, 70% of all women and 90% of Black women will get fibroids by the time they are 50 years old.

For over a decade, The White Dress Project has been advocating for women’s health, research and resources. On July 11-13, the group will host The Empowerment Experience in Washington, D.C.

The event will feature fundraising programs, health and wellness activities, community networking and expert speakers. WUSA9’s Delia Goncalves will be moderating some of the panel discussions. She is personally connected to this cause as a woman who has dealt with uterine fibroids.
