WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Volunteers geared up Sunday to promote safety and change for the decade old Family Day at the National Zoo.
Last year bullets struck two teens and other violence has plagued the traditional event for the past decade, but one group is working to put a stop to that.
Community leaders will be in uniforms this Monday for Family Day to help police combat violence. Around 75 volunteers have signed up to wear #ProjectSafeZoo t-shirts so the public will be able to identify them.
"A lot of times, we put all the weight on the law enforcement and the zoo and other places but this is part of our village. These are our children. We need to come together and be a part of the solution as well," said Ronald Moten, one of around 75 community activists that will voluntarily patrol Family Day at the National Zoo on Monday. Their goal is to help combat the decade or more of crime.
