Memorial Day weekend shootings in DC leave 4 dead, 8 injured

The Memorial Day weekend has been a deadly one in the nation's capital. Four people have been killed and eight others injured in eight shootings since Friday.

WASHINGTON - Four people were killed in eight shootings over the Memorial Day weekend in D.C. An additional eight people were injured.

The latest death happened early in the morning on Memorial Day. Police say 24-year-old Anthony Clark was shot and killed on Langston Terrace in Northeast D.C. around 2:30 a.m.

The deadliest shooting happened Saturday in the 4600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue Southwest. Police responded to the scene for the report of a shooting at about 10:11 p.m. They found a man and a woman with gunshot wounds. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died.

The victims have been identified as Jaquon Helm, 40, and Venius Badgett, 35, both of Southwest D.C.

Police have not released any information on possible suspects.

A third person was killed early Saturday. Friends described the victim, Alexander Mosby, as the guy who seemed to do everything right.

Mosby was shot to death just before 2 a.m. Saturday in the 2200 block of Savannah Terrace Southeast.

“This guy did it right and played all of the moves right on the chess board and still get killed. What can I say? It’s a sad day,” said Ronald Moten, a friend of Mosby.

Mosby owned District Culture, a clothing store on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Anacostia. He left behind a wife and three children.

Police are searching for a silver Infinity SUV possibly involved in the shooting.

D.C. police haven’t confirmed many more details about the other six shootings reported in the District this holiday weekend.

FRIDAY:

  • 1:01 a.m. in the 4800 block of 9th Street Northwest. Man taken to the hospital conscious and breathing. Lookout for two men in a dark colored vehicle heading eastbound in the 800 block of Decatur Street Northwest.
  • 9:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Crittenden Street Northwest. Man taken to the hospital conscious and breathing. No lookout at this time.
  • 7 p.m. in the Unit block of Forrester Street Southwest. Man taken to the hospital conscious and breathing. No lookout at this time.
  • 11:05 p.m. in the 3000 block of Stanton Road Southeast. Man taken to the hospital conscious and breathing. No lookout at this time.
  • 11:06 p.m. in the 800 block of Chesapeake Street Southeast. Three men taken to the hospital conscious and breathing. No lookout at this time.

SATURDAY:

  • Homicide: 1:44 a.m. in the 2200 block of Savannah Terrace Southeast, Victim: Alexander Mosby. Lookout for a silver Infinity SUV.
  • Double homicide: 10:10 p.m. in the 4600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue Southwest, Victims: Jaquon Helm and Venius Badgett. No lookout at this time.

SUNDAY:

  • 2:26 a.m. in the 2400 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue Southeast. Man taken to the hospital conscious and breathing. No lookout at this time.

The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia.
