WASHINGTON — More than 20 people are having to find a place to sleep Thursday night after a fire in Northeast D.C.
According to a spokesperson with DC Fire and EMS, a call for help came in around noon for an apartment fire in the 5500 block of Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue, NE.
Officials say the fire involved solar panels on the roof of the three-story apartment building and extended into the attic below. The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported.
DC Fire and EMS posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the fire left 26 residents and three pets displaced. The American Red Cross was called in to help those residents.
The nonprofit further explained that 20 adults and five children were receiving aid from the Red Cross.
"Trained volunteers are providing essential services--including food, water, financial resources, emotional support and the replacement of medications, according to need," said a spokesperson with the Red Cross. "In the days and weeks to come, volunteer team members will continue to work with impacted individuals and families to provide additional recovery resources and help those affected begin the long road to recovery."
Anyone who needs assistance is told to call 1-800-Red Cross for support.
