A Marine has died after a shooting at the Marine barracks in Southeast, D.C. in the early morning hours of New Year's Day.
The Marine has been identified as 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Riley S. Kuznia. The Marine Corps confirmed Wednesday that Kuznia was stationed at the Barracks where he served as a team leader for Guard Company.
The shooting happened around 5 a.m. at the Marine barracks located in the 800 block of I Street SE.
Police said Kuznia was transported to the hospital from the barracks. During a press conference around 11 a.m., authorities said he had died as a result of the shooting.
"We are truly saddened by this terrible loss. Riley was a highly driven and goal-oriented Marine whose positive attitude set the example here at the Barracks," said Col. Don Tomich, commanding officer of Marine Barracks. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Riley's family and friends, and our priority continues to be taking care of them during this tragic time."
Kuznia is from Karlstad, Minnesota. His personal decorations include the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
The shooting incident remains under investigation.
Police say it was not a self-inflicted gunshot wound that killed the Marine, but could not provide any additional details.
