2 DC leaders help first-generation college students achieve dreams

Back in 2018, Patrice Lancaster and Marc Williams teamed up to support just three college-bound students from the District.

WASHINGTON — Two D.C. leaders teamed up to help first-generation college students realize their dreams.

A small idea can make a significant impact. Back in 2018, Patrice Lancaster and Marc Williams teamed up to support just three college-bound students from the District. Now, the freshman send-off has grown to support 120 students from Wards 7 and 8 who are blazing trails and beating the odds.

Marc Williams walks the walk and realizes the pathway to success is paved not only with good intentions, but good work.

“My passion is giving back to the kids in our neighborhood. When you hear about youth it is all about them doing something wrong. This is a way we can highlight the kids who are doing something positive,” said Williams.

Williams, who runs Ward 8 non-profit Eagle Nest, and Ward 7 community leader Patrice Lancaster collect care packages and school supplies for teenagers who are the first in their families to go to college.

“Many come from single-family households who are struggling,” explained Williams, “so this care package that we give, although small, goes a long way for parents who don’t have the means.”

Their freshman send-off has gone a long way in supporting the young people from East of the River throughout their college careers. And the cycle of success continues with most recipients paying it forward by returning home to mentor and inspire other students coming behind.

“It doesn’t take much to lend a hand, ‘how you are doing? what can I do to help?’ any little, small gesture can be a spark that can change a kid from bad to good,” said Williams.

The freshman sendoff is scheduled for July 20 at Sycamore Oak in SE, but they still need your help to support these students who are leaving home for the first time for their freshman year of college. To donate contact The Pursue Foundation at connect@pursuedc.org.
