Intense house fire in Northeast DC leaves resident hospitalized, dog dead

About 100 firefighters responded to the scene to bring the intense blaze under control.

WASHINGTON — One person is in the hospital and a pet is dead after an intense fire destroyed a two-story house in Northeast D.C. just after midnight on Saturday.

DC Fire and EMS crews were called to the 5200 block of Blaine Street Northeast for a report of a house fire around 12:30 a.m. When crews got to the scene, they found the house engulfed in flames and quickly called a second alarm to get more firefighters to the scene.

About 100 firefighters worked quickly to get the blaze under control and keep it from spreading to homes on either side. Crews remained on scene for several hours into the morning, working to extinguish any hot spots and keep the fire from flaring up again.

DC Fire and EMS said on social media that one person was taken to the hospital with critical injuries, and a pet dog died in the fire. At least five people were displaced as a result of the fire, but that number is expected to go up, according to firefighters on the scene.

Investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire. It is not clear if the home had working smoke alarms.

No other information was immediately available.
