The University of Maryland is at the center of the lacrosse universe.
Both its Men's and Women's squads captured NCAA national lacrosse championships over the holiday weekend.
Both teams are usually competitive when placed against elite teams, but this marked the first time that the UMD men's squad had won a national championship since 1975.
Don Sadler Jr. played on the UMD Men's Lacrosse squad from 1979 to 1982. He said he was happy to see the men pull a win out.
"It was almost surreal," he said.
"Such a feeling that it finally happened, you know? We got the monkey off our back."
The State of Maryland has long had an obsession with lacrosse. The sport is actually designated as the state's official "team sport". Maryland's high school teams consistently rank high among national competition as well.
After both teams accomplished their championship victories, many fans took to Twitter to write: "Crabcakes and lacrosse. That's what Maryland does."
