Police in Baltimore have charged a suspect in the shooting death of a Lancaster high school student in what investigators are calling a Facebook Marketplace deal gone wrong.
Marques Harris, 18, is charged with first-degree homicide, attempted homicide, and other offenses relating to the murder of Carlos Carrazana Ricardo on the night of November 26 in Baltimore.
Carrazana Ricardo, who moved to Lancaster from Cuba last year, was a senior at J.P. McCaskey High School.
According to police, Carrazana Ricardo and a friend drove from Lancaster to the 2700 block of Harlem Avenue in Baltimore's Mosher neighborhood to purchase a car he'd seen on Facebook Marketplace.
But after seeing the vehicle, Carrazana Ricardo decided against making the purchase, police said. He and his friend began to drive off when someone fired multiple rounds at the vehicle, at least one of which struck Carrazana Ricardo in the back of the head. His friend, who was riding in the vehicle's passenger seat, later told police he leaned over to take the wheel and continued driving to look for help. He eventually crashed the vehicle on the 2800 block of Winchester Street.
Carrazana Ricardo later succumbed to his injuries at the University of Maryland Hospital's Shock Trauma Unit.
Investigators recovered multiple shell casings from the shooting scene.
Police were able to trace the phone number Carrazana Ricardo was communicating with during the Facebook Marketplace transaction and traced it to a phone belonging to Harris.
Carrazana Ricardo's friend later identified Harris from a photo lineup, according to police.
Investigators executed a search warrant at Harris' residence and recovered a handgun. Due to his status as a minor, Harris is legally prohibited from possessing a handgun, according to police.
Harris was charged on Dec. 2, according to the criminal complaint affidavit filed by investigators.
