VDOT worker killed by salt truck

Worker was standing by truck when another truck hit and killed him.

ASHBURN, Va. (WUSA9) -- A transportation worker spreading salt on the roads was killed when he was struck by another salt truck, Va. State Police said.

It happened at around 5:53 a.m. at the intersection of Belmont Ridge Road and Chesterton Street, in Ashburn, police said.

"A Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) contract worker had pulled his truck off to the right shoulder. He was standing at the rear of the truck near the spreader when he was struck by another VDOT dump truck. The contract worker was transported to Loudoun Hospital Center, where he died," State Police said in a news release.

The other driver was not injured in the crash. The whole incident is under investigation. Police have not released the name of the VDOT worker, they're trying to notify his family.

The fatal crash is under investigation.
