The latest news release from the Washington County Sheriff's Office:
April 1, 2016 — Washington County Sheriff’s Deputies will begin testing a patrol feline program alongside the existing K-9 unit.
This morning, April 1, 2016, Sheriff Garrett announced a new program which enlists the help of felines in patrol functions.
These felines are well equipped to chase suspects into heavily wooded areas, thick vegetation, and up trees, due to their agile movements and ability to navigate small spaces.
In addition to the tactical advantages, the budget impact is projected to be a cost savings, dependent on breed and acquisition method (adoption, etc.).
Sheriff’s Office officials will not be utilizing the team on Marine Patrol due to their aversion to bodies of water and distraction by seafood.
As part of the pre-employment screening, feline applicants will submit a voluntary screening for catnip usage.
The Sheriff’s Office is optimistic in the potential for this pilot program and doesn’t foresee any possible CATastrophes. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office wishes everyone a safe and happy April Fools Day.
