Around 40 people can't go home after fire at apartment building in DC's Adams Morgan neighborhood

The fire is located on the roof deck of a five-story apartment building located near Adams Mill Road and Lanier Place.

WASHINGTON — A fire destroyed the roof deck of an apartment building in the Adam's Morgan neighborhood of D.C. Friday night, DC Fire and EMS said.

The fire started around 8:30 p.m. and was first seen on the roof deck of a five-story apartment building located near Adams Mill Road and Lanier Place.

Most of the building is structurally fine and untouched by flames, but the roof is compromised.

Firefighters told WUSA9 the fire started on a wooden deck. Not only did the flames get into part of the roof, but firefighters had to cut into the roof to put it out.

No injuries have been reported.

The fire department told the people living in the building to check in for updates every hour on Friday night. They'll try to get people back in to grab medicine or other essentials.

But fire officials said it is highly unlikely anyone will be able to stay here tonight, with the shape the roof is in.

The Red Cross and other agencies will work to find people a place to stay – roughly 40 or so people including young families.

Twenty five units and 100 fire personnel were on scene.

Adams Morgan is a bustling neighborhood in the District. Hundreds of people appeared to be out on the streets watching firefighters work and talking to fire officials.

No other details have been released. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
