It's been a dangerous Sunday for motorists across the DMV-area. Police are investigating three separate motorcycle accidents, three of them were fatal.
The first accident happened around 3:45 a.m. Sunday when 47-year-old Hjalmar Melendez was trying to merge onto a ramp toward Eastern Avenue in D.C. while riding his motorcycle.
For unknown reasons, Melendez he ran off the road and flew off of his motorcycle.
Official said a car hit him while he was laying in the roadway and left the scene. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Investigators are working to identify the driver. They believe he or she was driving a silver sedan, possibly a Nissan Altima with front-end and passenger side damage.
The second accident happened just before 4 p.m. on Laurel Bowie Road, Prince George's County police said. The motorcyclist was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Police closed down Laurel Bowie Road at Thompkins Lane following the accident.
Around 7:45 p.m. Sunday, police responded to a third crash where a motorcycle crashed into another car on Baltimore Avenue near College Park. Police said the motorcyclist drove through an intersection and hit another car -- he was pronounced dead on the scene. The passengers inside the car were not injured. Authorities are investigating what led up to the crash.
Virginia State Police say they also responded to a motorcycle crash in the southbound lanes of I-95 at the 160 mile marker in Prince William County around 7:34 p.m. Sunday.
Officials say the motorcycle driver was weaving in and out of traffic when it collided with another car, ejecting the motorcyclist from the bike. The motorcyclist, Daniel E. Pittman, 41, of Woodbridge, Va., died at the scene. He was wearing a helmet.
The driver of the car, a 39-year-old female driver from Woodbridge, Va., was not injured in the crash.
Prince George's County police responded to the fifth crash around 6:40 p.m. on Monday. The motorcyclist was riding southbound in the 1600 block of Ritchie Road in Forestville when for unknown reasons the bike left the road. The victim, an adult male, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Police are urging motorists to drive carefully. Anyone with information on any of these crashes should call police.
