WASHINGTON — Four people are injured and one man is dead after two cars in Germantown, Md. crashed early Sunday morning, causing one of the cars to smash into a nearby carport and catch on fire.

Montgomery County Police were called to Md. Route 355 / Frederick Road and Plummer Drive at 1:31 a.m. in response to a crash. Once there, responders found a car on fire, slammed into a nearby carport.

Police said that a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta was making a left turn onto Plummer Drive from northbound Frederick Road when it collided into a 2013 Toyota Scion FR-S that was traveling south on Frederick Road.

The Toyota was pushed into the side of the carport from the impact of the initial collision and hit a car parked out front causing a fire to break out, police said. Firefighters were called to control the fire before it spread to the rest of the home.

Inside the car that crashed in the carport were three people, including a 14-year-old and a 20-year-old girl. All three were transported to a hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle, 51-year-old Resham Lal, was declared dead at the scene. He was the only one in the vehicle, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer said.

No one was inside the home with the carport, police said.

It is not yet clear what caused the two cars to crash.
