Proctor and Gamble launched a campaign earlier this year, Always #LikeAGirl. Their focus is to change the negative connotation associated with the phrase "like a girl".
This week, I had a chance to introduce one of their ambassadors, Virginia's own Karlie Harman. She shared her story to a room full of Girl Scouts in Leesburg, Va. Karlie is a 15-year-old who plays tackle football. She is the sole quarterback for Dulles South. Karlie has been an athlete all her life.
Karlie told the crowd,"When someone says you throw like a girl or kick like a girl, it's not a bad thing."
What was so wonderful about this event was not only Karlie sharing encouraging words and her inspirational story, but the amount of excitement from the Girl Scouts in the audience.
Once Karlie finished speaking, she asked if anyone had any questions. Immediately, 20 or so hands went in the air.
When asked what advice she has for young women, Karlie told them, "Be you in all you do!"
They asked Karlie and I questions for almost a half an hour! When we ran out of time, there were still a dozen or so hands up!
It was very encouraging to see young girls so enthused!
Karlie left the audience with this final thought about competing with the boys: "I don't think anything is a male dominated sport. I think if you are a human being and want to try something, you should do it!"
