WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA9) -- Court records show Relisha Rudd suspect Kahlil Tatum was filing for divorce at the same time his wife was discussing leaving him in the weeks prior to her murder in an Oxon Hill motel.
Tatum, the last known person with missing 8-year-old Relisha Rudd, died of an apparent suicide.
Court documents shed light on the relationship between Tatum and his wife, Andrea Tatum, who police believe he murdered sometime after checking into the motel March 19th and when her body was found March 20.
Prince George's County Police issued a warrant for Tatum's arrest in connection with his wife's murder on March 21, the day after an Amber Alert was issued for Relisha Rudd in Washington, DC.
In the warrant, investigators say that interviews with the victim's family determined that Andrea Tatum "was having domestic problems with her husband Kahlil Tatum" and that she "was contemplating leaving Kahlil Tatum."
But DC Superior Court records show that Kahlil Tatum was the one who filed for legal separation from his wife on February 7, 2014.
Kahlil Tatum is the defendant in the complaint, which says the couple was married in July 1990. He checked boxes on the legal form indicating that the separation "is mutual and voluntary," that the Tatums "have no marital property," and that he did not want his wife to pay him alimony or temporary financial support.
The address Kahlil Tatum listed on the separation papers, on the 2500 block of N street SE, is the same address DC police officers responded to with a warrant and "observed a large sum of US Currency on a table in plain view." Among other things, the search recovered 2 passports, multiple cell phones, $87 in cash, and children's clothing and shoes.
Police records indicate surveillance video shows the Tatums and three other people at the motel the night before police found Andrea Tatum dead.
Police say she died from an apparent gunshot to the head.
