How much does the average American spend on the Super Bowl?

If you are like the average American, you're ready to drop about $81 on a Super Bowl festivities. But if you are 35-44, or if you live in the Northeast, that number will be a whole lot bigger.

WASHINGTON — With the Super Bowl just hours away, let's dive into some fast facts about what Americans are spending for their Super Bowl parties, using some help from the National Retail Federation.

The NRF surveyed approximately 7,300 adults in January and asked them some questions about their expected spending habits. They found that $14.8 billion will be spent on Super Bowl festivities.

If you spread that among Americans, that means that the average person is spending about $81.

However, your age makes a big difference. People between the ages of 35 and 44, are expected to spend approximately $125 on the big game, whereas those 65 and older will spend only about $40.

Where you live matters too. In the "Patriots Country," in the Northeast, the average person is spending about $95. That compares to the west, where people are expected to spend $84 on average. The southern region and the Midwest bottom out the list at $79 and $70 respectively.

Meanwhile, the expected spending, matches a recent trend upwards, compared to the past. In 2008, the average American was spending about $60. It then spiked, and for the last five years or so, the number has hovered around $80.

Regardless of how much you spend, you'll be joining millions if you tune in. Seventy-two percent of all Americans said they will be watching the big game.

The game kicks off Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. on WUSA9. Game coverage starts bright and early at 11:30 a.m.
