FAIRFAX, Va. — A body was found in the woods in North Hill Park in Fairfax County along Route One Thursday afternoon, police said in a press conference.
On Wednesday, Fairfax County police received a tip that there could be human remains in the woods. Authorities searched, but did not find a body.
Officers secured the scene and returned Thursday morning and while searching found a freshly dug grave.
The body has been removed from the ground and was taken to the medical examiner's officer to determine the cause of death and identity of the victim.
At this time, officials said they do not know whether the victim is an adult or a juvenile. If it is a juvenile, they will not be identified.
Police said there is high chance this is gang-related.
“There is a high probability that this is gang-related and I can assure our community that our great detectives will bring those responsible for this discovery to justice as we continue to pray for this person’s family and friends," said Fairfax County Police Chief Edwin C. Roessler.
Officials also said they will bring the deceased's family justice.
Authorities ask anyone with any information to call 703-248-7800.
The investigation is ongoing.
