WASHINGTON — A group of medical students volunteered their time to reach out to neighbors in Southeast, D.C. They held a free clinic that focused on skin health at Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church on Monday.
Organizers say many communities in Wards 7 and 8 are underserved when it comes to dermatology care, and may not seek out preventative care.
"A lot of times African-Americans are not thinking that some of these skincare issues are going to affect them, whether it's psoriasis, whether it's needing to wear sun block and dealing with some of those issues like skin cancer and those kinds of things," said. Rev. Karen Curry. "We're not thinking that those things necessarily affect us, but they do."
Neighbors also underwent screenings for diabetes and high blood pressure, and were evaluated for skin conditions.
In some cases, they were helped with arrangements for follow-up visits with local doctors.
Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church will host more clinics with GW Medical Faculty Associates in the coming months.
Psoriasis clinics are scheduled for July 15, Aug. 19, and Sept. 16 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church. To sign up for upcoming clinics, call 202-741-3547 and leave your full name, contact info and preferred appointment time.
