BALTIMORE — An adult living in Baltimore has tested positive for West Nile virus, this is the first confirmed human case in Maryland this year.
The Maryland Department of Health said the patient is recovering at home.
The number of people infected by the disease fluctuates each year. In 2023, seven people in Maryland tested positive for the virus.
This comes just two days after reports that former top U.S. infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci is at home recovering from West Nile virus. According to the Associated Press, Dr. Fauci was hospitalized for a week, earlier in August after experiencing fever, chills, and extreme fatigue, all symptoms of West Nile virus.
So, what is West Nile virus?
It is a virus transmitted to human via mosquitoes infected by feeding on birds that also have the virus.
What does West Nile virus do?
The disease affects the nervous system. Up to 80% of people who are infected won't display symptoms. However, those with underlying health conditions will become severely ill.
Symptoms of West Nile virus:
- Fever
- Headache
- Body Aches
- Skin rash
- Swollen Lymph Glands
How long do symptoms last?
Symptoms can last a few days or as long as several weeks. People over the age of 50 or someone who is immunocompromised can become seriously ill.
How to prevent mosquito bites:
- Dump standing water
- Wear long sleeve shirt and pants
- Apply insect repellant
- Close windows or use screens
