WASHINGTON — As access to reproductive health care in the United States is under attack, one group is making a big statement.
Americans for Contraception (AFC) has erected a 20-foot inflatable IUD right outside Union Station in D.C. to raise awareness of the need to protect and codify the right to contraception. The giant IUD was unveiled Wednesday morning just as the Senate prepares to vote on the Right to Contraception Act.
Senators will vote on whether to support the right to contraception by federal law. Contraception refers to any action taken to prevent pregnancy.
Since Roe V. Wade was overturned in 2022, there has been confusion as to whether states have the right to take away access to some forms of birth control. With some lawmakers arguing that IUDs and emergency birth control bills can be used to induce an abortion. Legislation has been proposed in several states to restrict certain types of contraception, specifically IUDs, which are T-shaped pieces of plastic inserted into the uterus to provide birth control.
If passed, the Right to Contraception Act would give Americans the right to access birth control pills, patches, impacts, condoms, intrauterine devices (IUDs) and sterilization procedures.
The outcome of the vote will impact women, uterus owners, and families across the country.
