HILLANDALE, Md. — A fire station in Maryland is packing up and moving for four weeks after mold was found in its building.
That is the Hillandale Fire Station 724 at 13216 New Hampshire Ave., part of the Montgomery County Fire Department. The department initially said a potential airborne health issue was detected in the building, and later said the health concern is due to mold.
Mold remediation will take approximately four weeks. The remediation was recommended by a hygienist, the Department of General Services and the Montgomery County risk management division, the department said. All personnel and equipment are being temporarily relocated for the clean up.
The closure does not mean Hillandale and Colesville will be without firefighter coverage. During the station’s closure, neighboring stations in Burtonsville, Wheaton and Glenmont will cover service in the Hillandale station's area.
To make sure all personnel are safe and healthy, the fire department said it is working closely with the Hillandale Volunteer Fire Department, as well as the Montgomery County Volunteer Fire Rescue Association and the International Association of Firefighters Local 1664.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue said it will provide updates on the mold remediation as it develops.
