WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Thursday is being called: the Great ShakeOut.

ID=17344339

Authorities are trying to spread the word about earthquake preparedness and one of the big local event is about to get underway at the National Cathedral.

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake rocked the cathedral in 2011. It lasted 15-seconds, but caused $26 million worth of damage. Hundreds of ornately carved limestone fragments were left scattered around the cathedral. The cathedral has been raising money for repairs and now it's raising awareness about earthquakes.

Experts from the Geological Survey and FEMA are hosting the great shakeout earthquake drill. They're going to talk about earthquake hazards in our area and the importance of being ready for when a quake strikes.

Thursday morning's drill is set for 10. Everyone is encouraged to practice how to "drop, cover, and hold on," wherever you are at that time.
