The Glenmont and Wheaton Metro stations are closed as firefighters investigate reports of smoke in the tunnel
Fire crews respond to Glenmont Metro station

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The Glenmont and Wheaton Metro stations reopened Thursday morning after firefighters investigated reports of smoke in the tunnel between the Red Line stations and found no active fire or smoke.

Trains were stopped in the area and shuttle buses provided for riders between the two stations. No injuries were reported, according to Metro Transit Police.

Montgomery County fire officials said a "inspection train" reported slight haze. Firefighters used a "recon" train to investigate and found no smoke but only hazy conditions. They found no fire or smoke, and the tracks and tunnel are now clear, reports fire spokesperson Pete Piringer. According to a Metro spokesperson the haze was caused by a water discharge from a fire department standpipe.
