Gang leader Tavon White sentenced to 12 years in prison

A gang member who dealt drugs and impregnated four guards while incarcerated a Baltimore jail was sentenced to more than a decade in prison on Monday.

BALTIMORE (WUSA9) -- A gang member who dealt drugs and impregnated four guards while incarcerated a Baltimore jail was sentenced to more than a decade in prison on Monday.

Thirty-seven-year-old Tavon White was sentenced to 12 years for racketeering conspiracy for running operations of the Black Guerilla Family gang inside the Baltimore City Detention Center. He will then be placed on three years of supervised release.

White also pleaded guilty to a state charge of attempted murder, for which he received a sentence of 20 years in prison, served concurrent to his federal sentence.

According to his plea agreement, White has been a member of the BGF since 2000. White was in pretrial custody at the jail from 2009 to 2013, becoming the "lieutenant commander" of the gang there and then commander in 2011.

Officials say that White often directed the smuggling of contraband into the jail with the help of correctional officers in exchange for payment, gifts, or a share of the profits. He also admitted that he was personally involved in sexual relationships with and impregnated four correctional officers.

White is one of more than 40 defendants charged in the racketeering conspiracy. Forty of 44 defendants have been convicted, including 24 correctional officers. Officials say 35 defendants pleaded guilty while eight defendants went to trial. One defendant has died.
