ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A school in Alexandria is reassuring families after several students were seen role-playing a social studies lesson after class, leading to what school officials are calling an "inappropriate game."

The incident happened after school at Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy.

In a letter to families, Principal Laura Burkart said the game happened on the playground after school hours. The role-playing reportedly made witnessing students uncomfortable because of the nature of the inappropriate game and the language that was used.

"While I cannot go into the details of any specific student disciplinary outcome, I will say that students often want to discuss troubling topics from class in a variety of ways, some of which may cause offense," Burkart wrote.

The principal further added that she will be checking in with students when lessons, like the one the students were role-playing, are delivered.

"Next week, I will work with my team to incorporate messages reminding students to think before they speak and act into our social, emotional and academic learning lessons, but if you or your child have any questions or concerns about this incident that you would like to discuss further, you are welcome to reach out to me directly," the letter reads.

Burkart closes the letter by saying the academy is enriched by every child and family's unique background, perspective, culture, traditions and experiences but it is a collective responsibility to ensure that all students and families know they are valued.

"Thank you for your continued support and partnership by modeling these values at home so our students model them at school. I want to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to making Lyles Crouch a school where every student knows they belong."
