Spotsylvania County Public Schools names Dr. Clint M. Mitchell as new superintendent

Mitchell is replacing former superintendent Mark Taylor, who was hired in 2022 despite criticism over his lack of experience in the education field.

SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. — More than three months after controversial Spotsylvania County Public Schools Superintendent Mark Taylor was fired, the school board has found the new superintendent in Dr. Clint M. Mitchell.

The school board announced Mitchell as the new superintended Monday night at a school board meeting, citing his 19 years of educational leadership experience in Virginia school systems.

“Dr. Mitchell brings experience, enthusiasm for public education, and a solid commitment to fostering a positive interaction and culture for students and staff,” said School Board Chair Dr. Lorita Daniels. “We look forward to his expertise in community-building and new ideas to help carry out SCPS’s mission of preparing our students for their future while promoting a student-centered learning experience for all students.”

Mitchell will be leaving his current position as the superintendent of Colonial Beach Public Schools, a position he has held since 2021, where he was nominated for the 2024 Virginia Region 3 Superintendent of the Year.

In addition to his previous experience, Mitchell is a member of the Governor’s Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) task force on chronic absenteeism, chairs the Virginia Alliance of Black School Educators membership committee, is the Region 3 Virginia Association of School Superintendents professional development lead, and is a principal advisor for Share Our Strength-No Kid Hungry regarding best practices to address student chronic absenteeism and the impacts of food insecurity on students.

“It is an honor to be selected as the next Spotsylvania County Public Schools superintendent,” shared Dr. Mitchell. “I look forward to meeting and collaborating with Spotsylvania students, staff, families, and community members. My first priority will be conducting listening sessions across the county to ensure that I have a great understanding of the traditions, values, strengths, challenges, and needs in order to lead the development of a strategic plan that takes the school division to the next level.”

Mitchell's resume also includes roles such as an adjunct professor for James Madison University, principal for Fairfax County Public Schools, principal, assistant principal, and teacher for Prince William County Public Schools.

His contact with Spotsylvania County Public Schools will begin in August.

Mitchell is replacing former superintendent Mark Taylor, who was hired in 2022 despite criticism over his lack of experience in the education field. The board fired Taylor in March.
