Montgomery County Schools superintendent apologizes for handing of Virtual Academy program

"This is not the way that we should do business," Dr. Thomas Taylor said.

ROCKVILLE, Md. — The fight continues to save Montgomery County's Virtual Academy. The online learning program is not in next year's public school budget. For months, we've been hearing from parents hoping to change that.

On Tuesday, those parents made their appeal directly to the new superintendent, Dr. Thomas Taylor, who apologized to them after they arrived at the meeting holding "Save MVA" signs.

"I'm sorry that this happened. This is not the way that we should do business," Taylor said. "You should be communicated with in a more respectful way, and a more proactive way, and I'm just sorry that happened."

Taylor says he can't decisions made by the board, or change the budget that has already been approved. However, he said he takes responsibility for what happens next.

The Montgomery County Education Association says the county council can still step in and make a special request for funding.

Parents say it's too late to register their kids in alternate programs, and they are considering moving their students to other school districts.
