Fairfax County schools holding community forum on changing middle school start times

This change would begin during the 2025-26 school year, if approved.

FAIRFAX, Va. — Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) are considering the possibility of adjusting school start times for middle schools. The new start times would be later in the morning.

This change would begin during the 2025-26 school year, if approved.

"Research shows that later start times could significantly impact student health, well-being, and academic performance," FCPS stated in a Facebook post. The plan would explore starting middle schools at 8 a.m. or after.

The district is holding community forums for families to give feedback. During the event, they will hear from sleep experts and learn about the transportation challenges. The next session will happen Wednesday, May 22, at 6-8 p.m. at Frost Middle School.
