Crisis in the classroom: DC Council's swift response to truancy surge

Instead of getting kids in legal trouble, the new plan would refer them to social services to get help.

WASHINGTON — The DC Council is considering emergency legislation to help keep kids in the classroom.

According to The Washington Post, the measure would send teenagers, who are frequently skipping school, to social service programs instead of referring them to the court system.

It will begin as pilot program at five schools with high rates of truancy.

To determine its success, it will require the Department of Human Services to publish a report on its program in March. Then a final report in August.

If the legislation is passed and signed by the mayor, the pilot program will go into effect the upcoming school year.
