ALEXANDRIA, Va. — School resource officers (SROs) will continue to work in Alexandria schools to ensure a safe learning environment free from violence until the end of June 2023.
The Alexandria School Board met Thursday night and unanimously voted to extend the partnership between Alexandria City Public Schools and the Alexandria Police Department.
"To this end, we are recommending extending the current Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Alexandria Police Department through the end of June 2023," according to minutes taken from the meeting. "This extension will allow time to account for any potential recommendations that may come from the School Law Enforcement Partnership (SLEP) advisory group process to be considered as well as completion of the public comment process related to the review and potential amendment of the MOU."
The motion carried 9-0.
Alexandria City Public Schools started the 2021-20221 school year without SROs, before reinstating them three months later at the request of school leaders.
In spring, the Alexandria City Council and Mayor Wilson approved an ACPS request to continue funding SROs in all secondary schools in the division through the 2022-2023 school year.
