DC is having a kitten boom! Here’s how you can help

One shelter said they've already taken in 50 percent more kittens than this time last year.

WASHINGTON – Don’t be surprised to hear the meows of kittens coming from your garage this spring. Local shelters say The District is experiencing a kitten boom. In spite of spring being high-time for kitten births, the Humane Rescue Alliance of D.C. says it has taken in 50 percent more kittens compared to the same time last year.

“I really attribute it to the mild winter we had,” said Jennah Billeter, who directs the shelters volunteers and foster homes, which are in even higher demand this year. The shelter has taken in 300 kittens through April compared to 204 kittens through April 2018 — a four-year high, Billeter said.

“We need folks from our community to take a litter of kittens to foster them and then get them adopted to forever homes,” Billeter said.

The shelters said if you stumble on a litter, look for a mom before you call for help. The tiniest kittens need to be fed every few hours.
