More DC bike lane enforcement officers proposed

DC Mayor Bowser's budget proposal invests $2.8 million to hire 20 additional bike lane parking enforcement officers.

WASHINGTON -- D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser unveiled her K Street Transitway budget proposal on April 24, which includes investments revolving around transportation safety and bike lanes.

The proposal allocates $122.1 million for the Transitway. These funds will go toward "infrastructure and safety improvements for all users of the roadway," a press release said.

One of the improvements allocates $4.7 million to expand Vision Zero efforts, including investing $2.8 million to hire 20 additional bike lane parking enforcement officers.

Bike lane parking enforcement officers aim to reduce unsafe use of vehicles and bicycles by educating the public about legal rights and responsibilities of those sharing the road.

Bike lane officers also prevent drivers from parking their vehicles in bike lanes, obstructing the path of cyclists.

According to Bowser, the purpose of the Transitway to to create more efficient and reliable transportation. 

“The K Street Transitway project will transform Downtown with dedicated bus lanes, protected bike lanes, redesigned sidewalks, and safer intersections to help keep DC moving and growing," Bowser said in a press release.
