Wrong-way driver intentionally crashed into California Highway Patrol car on I-80, police say

Officials said acts of violence against their officers won't be tolerated as CHP works with the district attorney's office to hold the driver accountable.

DAVIS, Calif. — A wrong-way driver intentionally crashed their car into a California Highway Patrol vehicle along Interstate 80 Wednesday, police said.

"On March 13, two California Highway Patrol officers were targeted by an individual who deliberately crashed his vehicle head-on into a stopped CHP patrol vehicle," said Ezery Beauchamp, CHP assistant commissioner, in a video news release.

According to to the California Highway Patrol, the officers were both in the same car on the right-hand shoulder of I-80 when they were hit head on, just west of Mace Boulevard, in Davis. The officers had finished up a traffic stop before the crash.

Beauchamp said the person drove his car at a high rate of speed along the right shoulder and hit the vehicle head on. CHP released community video of the crash, which can be seen in the Twitter video below.

The two officers were hurt with minor to moderate injuries. The alleged wrong-way driver had minor injuries.

Beauchamp said acts of violence against their officers won't be tolerated as CHP works with the district attorney's office to hold the driver accountable.
