Mother was driving 98 mph seconds before crash that killed 3-year-old daughter, officials say

Danshell Evon was found guilty of gross negligent manslaughter, four counts of second-degree assault, and one count of neglect of a minor.

WHEATON-GLENMONT, Md. — A judge found a Maryland woman guilty in court Friday for her part in a crash that left her 3-year-old daughter dead in 2022

According to the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, 38-year-old Danshell Evon was found guilty of gross negligent manslaughter, four counts of second-degree assault, and one count of neglect of a minor.

The conviction stems from a crash that happened nearly two years ago.

Around 7:30 a.m. on May 12, 2022, Evon was driving her 2015 Kia Optima southbound on Connecticut Avenue near Atherton Drive when she hit a 1997 Ford F-150. Investigators say she was speeding at 98 mph in the seconds leading up to the crash.

Inside Evon's Optima were her two 13-year-old children and her 3-year-old daughter, Dreamie Dior Jackson. Evon and her teenage children were injured and suffered injuries not considered to be life-threatening but Dreamie died following the crash. Investigators say Dreamie was not secured properly in the car, riding in a backless booster seat contributing to her death.

More than six months later, Evon was arrested.

“This heartbreaking loss of such a young member of our community is a tragedy that was easily avoidable. At the speeds the defendant was traveling, she wasn’t driving a car, she was steering a missile down the road in the middle of rush hour. If the barest of common-sense parenting skills were in place, there would have been a proper child safety seat installed,” said State’s Attorney John McCarthy.

Evon is scheduled to be sentenced in August. She faces a maximum sentence of 55 years in prison.
